When networking in business, it’s important to develop your Unique Selling Point (USP) which is the most important aspect of your conversation when you are networking.

This is defined as the one thing that makes your business standout from your competition. For some businesses this is very easy to see the difference. It is important to do research on your competition and discover how you are different.

For some businesses the USP could be something as simple as offering good customer service. Some businesses have a problem in this area. Another business might offer a special gift after so many times of using a service or your prices may be better than your competition.

Whatever the difference that you make it is important to talk to people using the USP because it helps you develop your brand. Your USP will sell you to your perspective customers. The best way to describe it is that it will tell your customer what you do and why you do it better than your competition.

Although this is time to brag about your business, it should be done in a targeted way. Sometimes it is an advertising jingle that people can remember. As an example, Burger King’s “Have It Your Way” was a great ploy to give to other fast food burger customers.

The benefit for customers was that they would walk away with a burger done exactly the way they wanted it without hassle.

When you want to advance yourself in your company, a good way is to get involved with projects that senior managers are working on. They will usually want to know that you are serious about your own work first so do a good job on any project that comes your way.

The first thing you will need is to know how to get involved. The way to do this is to talk to your boss first and ask what projects might be available. Also make yourself available in staff meetings for specific tasks that might come up. Be the first one to offer your help if you have the time.

When your boss knows that you are good at keeping your word and getting projects done on time, you can also ask to be considered for new opportunities that come to his desk. Also, get to know senior management’s executive assistant. This individual can be very important to your growth within the company.

This PA will know what projects their senior manager is working on and where they might need help. If you have built a relationship with this person they may mention your name when something comes up.

Make sure that you let people in your company know about what you are doing. Send an email out or a mini-press release to let people know who you are, the department you work in and the projects that you are doing. No one can accept you for a project if they do not know you exist.

For some time now, people have asked me what the truth in regards to business networking groups is. And I have been pondering on what is the right answer in this direction - you see, there is no precise way of quantifying how useful business networking groups can be to you and your business. While at first I would be tempted to say, “They are truly useful” I come to think that not everybody is built to discuss in groups and make connections. Therefore, I will open this article by mentioning that business networking groups are designed only for those willing to listen to other people's opinions, to learn from others' mistakes, not to mention to abide to some unwritten rules of the business networking groups. The first thing that comes to my mind when it comes to why one should join business networking groups is to make new business connections. When you have to carry around a business without any additional help, without having someone to share your disasters and your highlights with, it becomes discouraging. Telling your family or close friends make no difference because they might not understand, and often they are unable to give an actual advice. Business networking groups underline the most important part of being human - the need of connection.

Whether you believe it or not, very few business networking groups are solely about their business. Actually, some of the most dull business networking groups discuss only about business - people are people and they sometimes need to connect through other means than just discussing about their business. Cracking jokes, going out in large groups to discuss different issues can be a great way to make business connections. A real business networking group will take everything to the next level - it will have speakers and programs, it will often take its members out for presentations in regards to methods of succeeding in your niche and so on. Finally, a serious business networking group will allow any Tom, Dick and Harry to improve his business to as much as 100 percent. I guess this is one of the first reason for which I recommend joining business networking groups.

The second reason is due to the fact that you are able to find the answer to your questions a lot faster. I mean, when you are forced to do research on your own, and see what others had to say through books or articles, you have no idea whether the idea will work in your case. When you are discussing with someone that went through the same thing you did, you will find a lot easier to see the solution to your problem by taking advantage of your colleague's knowledge.

Making connections with people in your own niche can bring a breath of fresh air in your business - you are not forgotten in your office chair anymore trying to pull your business through, but you are doing everything you can to keep it up to date. Remember that your business is like your own child, and often it is better to ask than to play smart and try to find all the answers on your own.

If You Embarrassed to Hand Out Your Business Card andWant to Design a Business Card That Will Boost Your Profits and Pull In Referrals Like Crazy?

There is one “key” to seeing and understanding business cards… and once you grasp it, you will never use business cards the same way again. It's the same key understanding that is demonstrated by an analysis of the 1% of business cards that ARE remembered, held onto and used.

This is what she has to say about cards:

“There are certain rules to follow that literally make or break your card.

The real discovery came when I started to broaden my scope and talk to CEOs, successful entrepreneurs, Presidents of networking companies… folks who I was sure would have studied business card marketing backwards and sideways… and most of them shamefacedly admitted that they knew next to nothing about the return of their business cards. These successful marketers were convinced that not using business cards effectively meant that they were losing money - but they didn't know what to do about it.

Click here to get your copy of this book now.

I found some of the answers with the big business card printing companies - their CEOs had gathered some great insider secrets over the years. Other answers were gleaned from some of the top graphic designers in the country. And I discovered tons of business card “tricks and techniques” from master networkers; on their own, these business card tips are powerful.

But nothing was more revealing than the business card success stories from dozens of business-clever men and women I interviewed over the years… who found out Simple little ways to generate mammoth-sized response… just from small changes on their business cards.”

There are different ways to network and we will look at specific approaches one can choose to implement. A mastermind group is a way to network between like-minded business individuals and focuses on a target that the group would like to achieve together. Mastermind groups communicate either in person, for example in a weekly breakfast meeting. Another way is via conferencing. They talk about a specific subject that has been approved by all parties prior to the networking meeting. The length of the meeting/call should also be established prior to starting it and a person should be appointed to make notes that can be distributed to all parties. A mastermind group shouldn't contain more than 5-6 people for ease of management. The networking of this group should be done with the target to empower each individual business owner.

Networking can also be done via websites, forums or blogs. It often consists of a community of like-minded individuals. It helps to build our businesses by exchanging business information and helpful tips. This form of networking, however, does need some form of moderation to keep things in perspective and in control. In today's society, this form of networking is gaining in popularity every day. Probably the fact that it is easy makes it very popular amongst home business owners.

We also network within specific interest groups, whether we realize it or not. Attending a regular meeting regardless of topic allows us to join forces with others alike. By attending, we build a continuous network of people around us. In business, this is very important. The more people we get to know through networking, the higher our chances of gaining more customers. Often networking is word of mouth. When we attend these meetings and meet others, we often exchange contact details. This is done most often by handing out our business cards. Doing this makes it very easy for others to remember what we do and hopefully recommending our services to third parties. This is probably the most important aspect of networking in business. It allows us to advertise our business effortlessly by word of mouth.

Another example of networking in business is via related magazines, ezines and newspapers. In any popular business niche these days there is already an established industry magazine on the market. We can exchange information and knowledge through these magazines and network with others in the same industry.

Most of us are not aware that networking in its essence starts in play school and progresses as we move through school, university and trade apprenticeship. It is an essential part of everyday life and helps us to communicate with each other. It builds our knowledge base and empowers us as like-minded individuals.

Networking in business helps the economy by being an integral part of business growth. As networking helps to build business connections, our benefits grow. This in turn is positive for the economy's growth.

Are you faced with the prospect of needing to ramp up your efforts to do more networking in business? Do you need to be more effective in your use of networking? Here are a few tips to help you feel more comfortable as you get started and make the whole process more worthwhile:

Make friends with the host. When you RSVP to attend the event, you often talk with or email someone who will actually be at the event. Use that contact information, either via email or phone, and take a second to introduce yourself. Let the person know you are new, and ask whether you can introduce yourself when you arrive at the event. This is an excellent way to get off to a good start — and it's likely the host or staff person will know several other attendees to whom you will be introduced right away.

Get the relationship started. Don't worry at all about doing business, or even much about talking about what you do. Keep focused on the other person, and ask questions about what they do, how they began in that field, and other details about their business. Just be yourself. It's really only necessary to give a very brief description of what you do. Save the details about your business for follow up time, and focus now on finding out as much as you can about new friends so you can begin a solid relationship. Keep in mind that it is quite likely that you will never actually do business with this person — they may never actually buy something from you. Instead, you want to be of service to that person and his or her entire network of friends, family and colleagues.

Always follow up. The event you attend is just the beginning. If you've made a thoughtful first impression with the people you met then you've laid the groundwork for your future relationship. Within 24 hours, send an individual follow-up email to each person you met, letting them know you enjoyed meeting them. If you hit it off, ask whether they might want to get together again to talk further. Hint: if you are the recipient of a nice-to-meet-you email, always answer it. This is the beginning of the real networking.

Use coffee (or virtual coffee) to follow up. If you meet someone with whom you have a good connection, don't be shy about asking whether they'd like to get together for coffee. If you live far apart or have restrictions on getting together, “virtual coffee” via phone can often work just as well. Pick a time and place, and show up. (Hint: it's polite to confirm your appointment 24 hours ahead of time so you won't be having coffee alone.) Start off by asking about the other person's business, and take notes and ask questions so you have a real understanding. Then, take a few minutes to talk about your business (your friend will probably directly ask you to do this). Make sure you focus on contacts you can help your friend with. I find it helpful to write down the connections and follow up steps in my notes so I don't forget. The whole coffee will probably take about an hour, and by the end you may have a more lasting sense of connection.

Schedule regular weekly time for networking. The whole process of networking in business can be quite time consuming, enough so that a friend of mine refers to networking as her part time job. Make sure you set aside enough time in your schedule to properly follow up. I find it helpful to set aside a block of time after a networking event for sending out emails. I use a regular time each week (I use Friday late-afternoons, which are otherwise not busy) to follow up on making connections and introductions for people I've had coffee with during the week. During this regular time, I also go through my index card system each week to make sure I've touched base with all my contacts to follow up on a regular, long-term basis.

Today's tough economic climate means that your trendy marketing strategies take on more importance than ever. The old-school way of marketing may not cut it in today's trendy, technology-driven world, either. That's where trendy marketing ideas come in:

Build a website or expand your current website to offer your customers more.

In today's fast-paced, technology-drive society, more and more people are turning to the power of the Internet. Thus, a primary marketing focus should be on your website.

Consider adding to your existing website so that it includes all pertinent information about your business, including your principals, charitable giving, your members, the history of your business and your overall strategy. It is also a good idea to start a blog or message boards, so that customers can post their experiences and you can share current information with your customers.

Use your website to offer special pricing and incentives, or special offers, such as free shipping. Finally, make sure your website is easy to read and navigate, and make sure it features plenty of bold graphics and eye-catching colors.

And don't forget about your search tools!

Develop a strong presence in online search engines and directories as to generate traffic to your website. Your customers will likely be using a search engine tool to find you or others like you, so it is wise to develop a great search engine presence so that you can direct customers to your website, and not your competitor's.

Always keep yourself in the spotlight.

There is no better way to watch your business drop off than to drop out of sight. When developing your trendy marketing ideas and strategies, make it a point to space them appropriately. At any given time, you want to make sure your image is attracting new customers and not simply a flash in the pan.

Offer your customers something they currently aren't getting from your competitors.

It pays to repeat this over and over: if you offer something no one else does, chances are you will leave your mark and generate business. There is no better way to achieve a trendy marketing strategy than to give your customers something that they simply don't get from your competitors.

Don't forget about your current customer base.

Trendy marketing ideas may involve keeping a list of current customer and luring them back to use your services or purchase your goods. You have a list of customers that have used your business in the past, so take advantage of it and keep in touch with them, either through direct mailings or emails.

The more you stay in touch with your customers, the more remember you and hopefully use you again in the future. Your relationship with your current customers is essential, as customers want to use companies that they believe in and trust.

Network yourself and your business.

Consider networking in business and professional groups, and consider online social networking. Trendy marketing is all about maintain a presence through every possible media, ensuring that customers and professionals know who you are, what you do and what you have to offer.

Trendy marketing techniques do not have to involve the latest widgets or iPhone apps. Instead, it is simply taking tried-and-true advertising strategies and putting a fresh, innovative spin on them.

For example, when you send out your newsletters, do you simply include new product announcements? Increase the trendiness of your newsletters by including valuable ideas, such as directions for a DIY craft or insight from a prominent industry insider. Putting a new spin on a proven technique is the most successful, trendiest marketing strategy of all.
